Reading Log

September 11th, 2017-Reading Log #1 //Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J. K. Rowling Topic Choice 1-Characters
A boy named Harry Potter, aged twelve years old, is a wizard who had spent one year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is important because he is an extraordinary wizard who is praised after, as a character named Dobby says," Harry Potter is humble and modest... Harry Potter speaks not of his triumph over He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" (15). In this quote Dobby, a creature known as a house-elf, says that Harry Potter is sought after due to his great traits. This leads me to believe that Harry Potter is a significant character in this book since he is known as having great qualities including modesty and humbleness  as well as being a famous wizard whose bravery assisted him to defend against Voldemort, or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named as Dobby as calls him. Harry Potter seems to be a static character since he continues to be obedient towards others and does not do any wrongdoings later on in the story. In the book, Ron, a great friend of Harry Potter says," What's been going on? Why haven't you been answering my letters?"(24). In this quote Ron, a helpful, courteous friend worries about Harry Potter and goes to talk to him to see what is happening. When Ron finds out that Harry Potter is locked in his room in his uncles house (Harry Potter lives in his uncle's house because his parents are dead), Ron, being a supportive friend, helps Harry Potter escape. Ron is also a static character as he continues to be Harry Potter's trustworthy friend.
September 25th, 2017-Reading Log #2 //Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling Topic Choice 3-Plot
Harry Potter, Ron, and Hermione enter a bookshop called Flourish and Blotts, where an author named Glideroy Lockhart is signing copies of a autobiography called Magical Me. When this author sees Harry Potter, he gives Harry and his schoolmates (Ron and Hermione) each copies of Lockhart's books. A photographer that works for the Daily Prophet then takes pictures of Harry Potter with Glideroy Lockhart. Harry Potter then walked away after being congratulated  and gave his books to Ginny, Ron's sister.  Once Harry Potter did this Draco Malfoy, a wizard who is the same age as Harry, begins to mock him. As Draco Malfoy said,"Famous Harry Potter. Can's even go into a bookshop without making the front page"(61). This leads me to think that Draco envies Harry Potter because of all the attention he receives and how everyone treats him as a hero. Draco also said,"  I suppose your parents will go hungry for a month to pay for all those [books]"(61). Draco says this rude insult to Ron who then begins to get furious, but then Harry and Hermione keep him back from fighting. Draco seems to be a very mean character who insults other people based on their wealth, just because Draco has rich parents (this is mentioned earlier in the story). This scene is important because it reveals Draco's personality and how he think of Harry Potter, the main protagonist. This scene takes place in the rising action of the plot structure. I predict that Draco is the main antagonist of the story and is going to cause a major conflict.

October 19th, 2017-Reading Log #3 //City of Fire by Laurence Yep Topic Choice 1-Characters
Leech, a 12-year old boy from Asian descent, is one of the main characters of this book. His companion, Koko is another main character as well. Leech is a short, weak boy as it says in the book," He was small for his twelve years, but that was probably from lack of proper nourishment since he had grown up on the vicious streets and alleys of San Francisco. He was quick but not particularly strong" (1). Koko on the other hand,  is a chubby kid who appears to be harmless at first, but is actually quite dangerous. Leech is a dynamic character because he will become a brutal person later in the story, as it says," Beneath the childish exterior beat the heart of a cold-blooded killer who had to be stopped before his special abilities could turn him into a monster" (1).  Koko will not change his attributes and continue helping Leech, making him a static character.  Leech is an important character in this book because he will go on a journey to find a treasure that thieves stole from his family.  Koko is an important person in this book because he offers great help to Leech, and without him Leech would be in all kinds of trouble.
